Introduction to Daredevil 604
New York is under siege by The Beast, the demon overlord of The Hand, and his ninja horde. The initial wave of attacks not only targeted the city;s law enforcement, but also its newly elected mayor, Wilson Fisk, the former Kingpin of Crime. With Fisk in critical condition, Deputy Mayor Matt Murdock (a.k.a. Daredevil, The Man Without Fear) FOund himself promoted to Mayor of New York.
With more responsibility on his shoulders than ever before, Matt has leaned on Daredevil's allies and his new mayoral authority to recruit vigilantes and crime bosses alike to defend the city in the police's absence.
However, when the beast unleashed a mysterious fog through the streets, Matt unexpectedly lost consciousness, leaving New York leaderless and covered in a sickening cloud. Fortunately, one man seems to have a way to disperse the gas, and he just happens to be the Mayor's priest...
Shepherds & Warriors
If I can be completely honest, there was a time that I had considered replacing this title in the blog's rotation. I enjoyed the book, but I was finding myself stretching for themes to discuss. Daredevil 604 confirms that I should keep covering this great book! It has the action we look for from The Man Without Fear, but we are introduced to a new fighting force called the Ordo Dragonum. This ancient order is comprised of priests who fight off supernatural threats to the world at large and now they are here to aid Daredevil in his fight against The Hand.
Much of the issue serves as a bit of a history lesson on the Ordo Dragonum, which shows some pretty amazing battles they have fought over the centuries. They are certainly equipped to handle The Beast, but it won't be easy. For me, the most interesting part of these heroes is that they are all parish priests. They preach, hold confessionals, and serve the needs of their congregation. In their other calling, they ruthlessly attack intruders to their realm to protect the human race. They join in the fight alongside Daredevil against The Beast and his hordes of ninjas. The last thing we see from their battle is the poisonous fog unleashed on the city turning into even more assassins. The issue ends with the Kingpin barging into his old office.
Personally, I think it is pretty awesome that a secret order of priests have come to the rescue of the city! Not only that, but they all care very much for their parishes. They live out a potent dual calling as both shepherd and warrior, all in service to God's people. We may not be called to fight vampires or undead ninjas, but we are all called to serve one another for the sake of the Gospel. For insight into this, check out Ephesians 4:1-16. You will read that while we all have different callings, we are united through the One True God! May God continue to bless you as you live out your calling through Christ.
